Could the universe have remained lifeless?

No, because that would go against the idea that the aim of the universe is beauty. A simulation of life on earth is the purpose why the universe exists. A conscious being - God - creates and recreates the universe to keep Him - used in a genderless sense - company. The universe is also the stage on which a simulation takes place. The simulation from our point of view is to praise God as much as possible while we are on trial on earth. What God is looking out for is sincere friendship, adoration and love from humans. The universe exists in the mind of God. From another point of view God continually blows out a different the universe at every moment- without tiring of course. No time passes between each blow. God stands above time, as well as space and matter. Schematically, God blows the universe as shown below. That above image shows the flower of life configuration which is the root of existence.
